Live Video Broadcast on your Blog with Justin.tv and Wibiya

  • About the author

Cindy Cindy is a professional designer, tech enthusiast and avid gamer who has recently delved into the world of wordpress. She loves to work on Application GUI Design for mobile and desktop apps. When she's not working or blogging, you can find her tapping her life away to Tap Tap Revenge 3 on her iPhone 3GS.

I remember doing a lot of gameplay videos on Tap Tap Revenge 3 but watching live video broadcasts from other great players using Justin.tv is something else.  It was actually a great time watching them play live at that moment while we are all bonding inside the chatroom moderated by the broadcaster himself.   Now if you add live video broadcasting on your blog, wouldn’t that be a much more personal way to engage with your readers?  You can set up live discussions with them about certain topics, and who knows you might end up in a long healthy debate.

Why Use Live Video Broadcast?

What is more thrilling about building your brand this way is that anything can happen at any moment like a reality show.   Some people I know who I watched had some silly bloopers doing live broadcasts like family members talking in the background or your dog taking over your broadcast by barking non-stop.  It’s part of the deal with live video but sometimes you can earn your readers’ trust this way and they can become confident and feel at home around your whole persona no matter what you blog about.

Let’s start with how to implement live video directly on your blog with Justin.tv and Wibiya.

Add Justin.tv Live Video Feature to Wibiya Toolbar

You can install Wibiya toolbar on your site and choose a few good applications including Justin.tv Live Video Broadcasting.  You can find this under Add Applications on your Wibiya user account.

You can further edit the settings directly on your Wibiya account under My Applications. You can hide your past broadcasts from showing up on your toolbar so your viewers can focus on the video being broadcasted live at the moment.

live video

You want to know how many viewers watching your live video?  Add an icon or text to display the number of viewers and your online status for your video channel.  The icon becomes green when your channel is online.

Since justin.tv has no chatroom enabled yet for Wibiya, you can install Social Chat on Wibiya as an option and let your viewers log in using Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo! or MySpace.  Now we already have configured our toolbar.  Let’s set up a free account over at Justin.tv.  We’re almost ready to broadcast :)

Setting Up Your Live Video Broadcast on Justin.tv

If  you use an external webcam as a source for your broadcast, you’ll need an application like ManyCam or WebcamMax to link your video source for the web.  I use ManyCam because I can easily locate the source of my video.  No need to hit the record button.  As soon as you see the video feed working in ManyCam, its ready to show up in justin.tv.

live video

Registering a free account on Justin.tv is easy.  After your account is set up you can go directly to start testing your own live video broadcast by pressing the large red ‘Broadcast’ button on the top right.

live video

Grant justin.tv access to your microphone and camera settings.  Let’s double check first.   We now have our laptop webcam or external camera ready and our video feed in ManyCam or WebcamMax.   You can now press ‘Allow’.

live video

We now see the video feed on our justin.tv channel, but we aren’t live yet.  Get ready and look your best. It’s showtime!  Lights.  Camera.  Action!  Press ‘Start’.

live video

You can give a name for the broadcast, then your video feed goes live.  If you invite your readers to watch from your own blog, you can tell them to click on the justin.tv icon on your toolbar and its ready for view.  This is how your viewers will watch from your site.

live video

This helps making a direct connection to your blog visitors, especially if you have a strong web presence with video podcasting like Miss Ileane of Basic Blog Tips.  Live video broadcasts will not only strengthen your brand, but it will also help reduce bounce rate while bringing your online community together to deliver information in a more personal way.

Aaand cut!  That’s a wrap!

    Hi Cindy,

It was fantastic fun watching your “tap tap” videos & this is an excellent introduction to Justin.tv that you’ve put together. I’ve signed up as “Noaspa” – and am definitely planning to start using the broadcast facility at some stage.

Thanks a million & hope you are tap tapping well & giggling greatly ;)

    Cheers

I have been wanting to install the wibiya plugin on my blog but I stay away from those that haven’t been tested yet on the latest version of WordPress. I have used Justin.tv most recently to watch the Emmys so I would love this added plug in. Nice post Cindy.

hey Karen, I use wibiya on the latest wordpress (3.0.1), so far its running good for me. I learned about Justin.tv when I was invited by a friend of mine to his live video channel, the bonding was pretty amazing with the host talking to all of us in the chat.

Cindy this is a really great post. I think I first learned about Wibiya through SEOmoz because it’s the service they use for their videos. I never knew it could be set up to broadcast live from a blog. Thank you for the very thorough walk through. I am going to bookmark this page so I have a reference if I ever get the courage to run a live feed.
