As a dedicated desktop and mobile GUI designer, I didnt expect that I would stumble on photoretouching or photomanipulation a couple years back. I was looking for some freelance work to help pay the bills so I had to try anything I can get my hands on. And besides, I do love art so I hoped to progress on this naturally. Speed is one of my favorite retouching pieces because it reminds me of those sports glamour portraits from Nike.
The part that always takes me the longest to edit is the hair. The Extraction tool from Photoshop is great but I dont find it effective on some photos that have gray background or with uneven spread of hair strands. Eventually I discovered my own method of doing it, still some effort needed but had better output quality than the Liquify tool, at least for me. I might share a tutorial on that when I get around to it :)

It looks fine to me – the hair does indeed have a bright outline, and that seems appropriate given the sun and the subject matter.
Thank you so much for sharing! I am curious to see how a tutorial would go, not because I do any photo retouching/manipulation myself, but because I’m curious at how one identifies trouble areas in the first place.

Yes the bright outline was was done by accident when I was experimenting with my method, so an easy way to avoid tweaking more of the hair is to add a sun :)
I havent really done photoshop tutorials (or any tutorial) before, so I guess its a good time to actually share a little something from me.

Cindy, what version of Photoshop are you using? They have some awesome new tools in CS5. I have CS3 but never learned how to deal with the hair. Good job!

Hey Ileane, thanks :) The hair is always the last part when I work with these photos. I’m using CS4 still. I want to get the entire suite and use Lightroom 3… would save a lot of time on retouching them.
